The Season of First Snow

In Lapland, it is said that there are not just four seasons, but eight. One of the most magical of these is the Season of First Snow – that moment when the earth receives its first white veil and all of nature seems to hold its breath before the true winter arrives.

The days are still bright and crisp, and in the evenings, the air fills with a deep blue twilight unlike anywhere else. Even the thinnest layer of snow transforms the landscape in an instant – the fells, forests, and rivers take on a new, quiet beauty that invites you to slow down and simply take it all in.

The Time of Reindeer separation

With the arrival of the first snow begins one of Lapland’s most fascinating traditions: the reindeer separation. It is the most important moment of the reindeer herding year, when the animals are gathered, counted, and separated. Some will continue breeding, some are sold, and each reindeer finds its rightful owner.

But the separations are much more than work – they are a celebration of community, where families and friends come together. Even the youngest learn early about reindeer herding skills and the deep respect for these animals, passing down from generation to generation the unique bond that ties people and nature together in the North.

Tykkikisat – The First Beat of Winter

With the arrival of the first snow, it’s not only nature and reindeer herding that come to life — the winter sports season begins as well. Every November, the traditional Tykkikisat races are held in Olos, Muonio.

These are not just any ski races — they are official FIS competitions, attracting many of the world’s top cross-country skiers who come to test their form against each other right at the start of the season.

For many athletes, Tykkikisat is an important opportunity to make a strong first impression for the upcoming winter — and it’s also where the first FIS points of the season are awarded. This year, the Tykkikisat will take place in Olos from November 14th to 16th, 2025.
