Jerisjärvi is the largest of the lakes in the Muonio region, and offers hikers a spectacular view of the surrounding fells. The lake is attached to the Pallas-Yllästunturi National Park in the north-east, and everywhere you look you can sense the beneficial effects of nature. There are numerous islands in Lake Jerisjärvi, which offer interesting route options for paddlers. However, you should be aware that some of the islands (Haltioletto) are off-limits for landing.

Lake Jerisjärvi is an excellent option for hiking. You can either make shorter day trips to the lake, or take a longer stage around Isosaari island (23 km). This route gives you a comprehensive view of the picturesque surroundings of Lake Jerisjärvi. Although the roads are fairly close to all the shores, the atmosphere on the lake is desert-like and the silence profound. In windy weather, hikers should be aware of the lake’s changeable conditions and the possibility of waves.

The best starting point for Lake Jerisjärvi is in the north-western bay of the lake, near the Kutuniva Bridge (Pallas Road). From Kutuniva, 3.5 km towards the islands, there is a hut at the end of Kaarneslahti bay. The hut is managed by the Jerisjärvi Muijat Ry and is open to the public. Anyone taking a break in the area can make a voluntary donation of firewood as a token of appreciation. Shortly after Kaarneslahti, the Keimiöniemi fishponds will be encountered on the route. The old and beautiful fishing ground sends a strong message about the historic fishing grounds.

Jerisjärvi is also a starting point for those heading to Jerisjoki, as it is the river’s headwaters. A beautiful waterway flows from the lake all the way to the village of Muonio.

[185
post-6935","paddling_routes","type-paddling_routes","status-publish","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","paddling_routes-lake
