TERMINOLOGY
INHALABLE PARTICLES
include all aerosol particles which are less than 10 μm in diameter. Practically this is most of the aerosol particles in the atmosphere, including dust and sea salt. The total mass of inhalable particle is called PM 10 (Particulate Matter < 10 μm).
FINE PARTICLES
Fine particles are smaller than inhalable particles, and include those aerosol particles which are less than 2.5 μm in diameter. For example, combustion processes produce fine particles. Fine particles are considered to be the most harmful form of air pollution for human health. The total mass of fine particles is called PM 2.5 (Particulate Matter < 2.5).

BLACK CARBON
is a component of fine particulate matter. It is formed by incomplete combustion of fossil fuels, biofuel, and biomass. As its name implies, black carbon is a strong absorber of visible light.
AIR QUALITY INDEX
Air Quality Index is used to describe the air quality in simple terms and an easy to understand color scale. It is based on measured air quality data and gives an overall characterization of the actual air quality. Pallas index is based on US EPA index.

PERMAFROST
is defined as ground with a temperature that remains at or below freezing (0°C) for two or more consecutive years. High latitudes and mountain regions have permafrost soils.
THE PALLAS SUPERSITE
consists of versatile research infrastructure for monitoring and studying the atmosphere, ecosystems and their interactions. Pallas in Muonio is located 170 km north of the Arctic Circle, partly in the area of Pallas-Yllästunturi National Park.
